John R. Harrison
Attorney John R. Harrison practices in the areas of elder and special needs law. He assists older adults and individuals with special needs and their families with estate planning, Medicaid, guardianship, litigation, probate matters, and the maintenance of public benefits. He also works with public agencies throughout Ohio that provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities, mental illness, or who have substance abuse issues.
John spent the majority of his career working for Disability Rights Ohio, The Legal Aid Society of Columbus, and in private practice, where he advocated for the rights of people with disabilities of all ages in diverse civil matters. He gained significant litigation, mediation, and negotiation experience during this time. After working with individual clients for many years, John was inspired to tackle legal issues that affect the broader population. He strove to right injustices within our society, finding a way to do so by working with public agencies and county boards. Of note, he served as lead counsel in McQueen v. Cuyahoga County Probate Court, 135 Ohio St.3d 291, 2013 Ohio 65, which by a unanimous decision, the Ohio Supreme court guaranteed the right of a ward under guardianship who is unable to pay for an attorney for a review hearing, the right to have counsel appointed at court expense.
John is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association’s Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law Section and Elder and Special Needs Law Committee. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1990 and in 1995 he received his J.D. degree with honors from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He is admitted to practice before the Courts of the State of Ohio, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Ohio, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
