My heart goes out to caregivers. It is an emotionally exhausting role, often causing family members to constantly worry about their loved one. Will they be okay? Did they eat enough? Did they take their medicine? Did I do this or that correctly? It doesn’t stop. And then there is the paperwork … the never-ending paperwork that always seems to be there and a challenge to complete. Yikes! How do they do it?! It can be very overwhelming for them. Here are a few suggestions for these wonderful people:
- Try to take time for yourself, even if it’s a minute just to “clear your head.” Look into the local organizations offering respite care to see if one is right for you.
- For an extended break, contact your local Office on Aging for a recommendation for a non-medical home care company. If you live in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, or Medina Counties, The Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging offers a variety of resources regarding caregiver support.
- Perhaps take a moment with your loved one and turn it into a “visit” versus a caretaking moment. I’m sure they would really enjoy having that type of quality time with you.
Until we speak again, have a wonderful summer!
