If you’re concerned about how your community and the people in it would fare in an emergency situation, you may want to join CERT – Community Emergency Response Team. The Department of Homeland Security has made funds available to train local citizens to respond when called upon by the safety forces in their local communities. A trained citizenry can take on responsibility for certain support functions to enable the safety forces to do their own jobs. For example, when an area needs to be cordoned off, CERT volunteers can staff the barricades, provide alternate routing information, etc.
CERT volunteers regularly receive information, such as Help! The Power is Out…, which help all of us be better prepared to ‘weather the storm.’
