Sonja’s Suggestions: Planning for Your Pets

Pets are a big part of people’s lives and are typically considered members of the family. I have had many conversations with both friends and clients about what will happen to the family pet after the owner is no longer able to care for them or passes away. It is a heartbreaking conversation. Who will take care of poor little “Fido?”

As an animal lover, I take this to heart. Our little companions need to be considered, so here are a few suggestions:

  • Ohio allows Pet Trusts, so arrange for a trust for your pet. Consider a letter of instruction and include who will care for your pet, the types of food he likes, the name of the veterinarian, and how you want the money in the trust to be spent. The ASPCA offers a pet trust primer. Chick here for details.
  • Speak with your family and friends so they know your wishes.
  • Contact local animal rescue groups. Some organizations will foster an animal until a new home can be found. Paws Ohio in Cleveland and Paws & Prayers in Akron both offer fostering services in Northeast Ohio.

Until we speak again,
